Guide to Lasik & Laser Eye Surgery

Our eyes are maybe one of the most important organs of ours. We have to see things in order to know about the world, to be glad for the colors. When having problems with our sight laser eye surgery might be an option. Accepting the idea of a laser eye surgery is hard to make, being a difficult decision. Laser eye surgery can have a lot of benefits and can be a great advantage for many people, by correcting their vision, thus having no need to wear contact lenses or glasses. The clear front of the eye, the cornea is getting reshaped with Lasik Laser Eye Surgery, changing its focusing power. Laser eye surgery might have various benefits, like not needing to wear glasses or contact lenses, managing to practice sports, driving hassle free; but there can be minimal disadvantages too, like the accidental infection of the cornea, slight bleeding, and abnormal reactions to the anesthetics.

Laser eye surgery procedures like LASEK and PRK by using an excimer laser succeed to permanently change the shape of the anterior cornea, removing and vaporizing a smaller part of tissue from the corneal stroma located at the front of the eye.

One of the most recognized type of laser eye surgery is LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), which is a refractive surgery in order to correct astigmatism, hyperopia, myopia. This type of laser eye surgery includes different procedures than PRK, by creating a permanent flap in the deeper layers of the cornea. The procedure takes up one hour to complete, both eyes can be operated. The patient remains awake during the operation, local anaesthetic is used. The patient has to lie down, after that a ring is placed on the eye and pressure placed to create suction on the cornea. The patient has to focus on a red or green light that may be seen. The surgery does not require stitches. The shape of the cornea is being altered using the laser to removing corneal tissue. After then the cornea will be reshaped in order to improve vision.

In order the patient to feel less pain during the operation and less time for recovery to be required, photorefractive keratectomy, PRK is generally preferred. During PRK surgery, prior to the ablation, the outer layer of the cornea is removed, which allows the cells to regenerate after surgery. After removing the corneal epithelium, the deeper layers are getting reshaped by a laser and will permanently remain that way.
Laser eye surgeries are proven to be more and more effective, the procedure being quick and quite risk free. Knowing about the benefits and risks of laser eye surgery before acquiring it could make ones decision to accept the offered opportunity to put contact lenses and glasses down.
