The Importance of Regular Eye Examination

When eyes and vision look normal, one may not suspect that some problems may exist there. Timely diagnosis and proper treatment are not only important for sustaining good eyesight or vision but also to prevent complications later.

How frequent should be eye examination? Eye specialists maintain one should start eye examination of a child right from his or her birth so as to find out any congenital defects or disorders in eyes. Early diagnosis and treatment can be great help in case of such disorders.

While eye specialists are unanimous that regular examination is mandatory but its frequency depends the age, race, background, medical or family history of the person concerned. Those with diabetes may have to be more careful and regular in their eyes examinations than those who do not have any such history or are not suffering from blood pressure.

The idea of the regular eye examination is to minimize risk factors, keeps eyes healthy and retains good vision in both the eyes. After the first examination of eyes at the time of birth, eye specialists can advise parents of treatment, if any, to treat congenital defects or any other disorder so as to prevent loss of vision either due to a defect or some hereditary disorder.

Also important is another eye examination before a child is three years old or latest before he or she goes to a school. These examinations can help eye specialists to assess vision development and detect if any vision impairment has taken place in early years of a child. Studies have proved that premature babies or underweight babies may be prone to eye defects and ailments. Then there are cases where mothers are known to be prone to infections and may pass on the infections to their babies thus making it possible or fit case for children born with cross eyes or other congenital disorders.

As the child starts growing and going to school, his or her vision witness’s quick changes which needs to be monitored through regular eye examinations. There are cases where the development of vision is not normal either because of hereditary factors or some defects in eyes. These need to be corrected and treated properly.

With increased use of computer screens, long hours before television sets and changed life style may be asserting additional pressure both on eyes and healthy vision. Only regular examination can detect any aberration or problem in eyes. It is between the age of 40 and 50 years that incidence of eye related problems increases tremendously. It is during this age that majority of people opt for either glasses or contact lenses for correcting their vision or eyesight. Those suffering
