The sun is getting stronger each year; its rays are harmful for your skin and mostly for your eyes. Harmful UV rays can severely damage your eyes and vision that is why proper precaution is needed when staying in sunlight. There are various methods of protecting your vision and eyes from the harmful UVA and UVB rays. The two most common methods are the wearing of sunglasses and contact lenses.
On the short term your eyes are disturbed by the UV rays, but on the long term they can cause severe injuries to your vision. The UV rays can severely damage your retina, which is the center of your eyes rich with nerves, used for seeing; the damages can hardly turn up reversible. And more dangerous, UV damage can lead to skin cancer on the thin skin around your eyes. The best option is the use of sunglasses against rays and sunlight. Always choose 100% UV protection sunglasses, being sure that these sunglasses protect your vision against both, UVA and UVB rays. The ideal sunglasses should be in the right color, being free of distortion, advisory to be grey for color recognition. Your sunglasses should also screen out the highest amount of the visible light (70-90%). The style and size of the chosen sunglasses depends on your taste and preferences. Fortunately they are available in many types, forms, shapes and colors.
Another way of protecting your vision against UV rays is the use of contact lenses. There are specifically developed contact lenses protecting against UVA and UVB rays. These contact lenses against UV radiation are absorbing the rays, protecting your eye surface to be reached by high amounts of harmful rays. Even if wearing sunglasses rays can get into your eyes from above and around the glasses; contact lenses can protect your eyes from these rays.
After the US Food and Drug Administration standards the UV protection lenses for general use have to block at least 70% of the UVA rays, but the most optimal would be 90% UVB and UVA blocking. |
